Asthma Adventure Camp
Illinois Location (July 9-14, 2006)Imagine the inability to participate in sports or summer camp activities. Many asthmatic children are faced with this reality. Through close medical supervision, Asthma Adventure Camp allows asthmatic children an opportunity to experience hiking, canoeing, swimming and field games. NOT JUST A REGULAR CAMP For over a quarter century, Asthma Adventure Camp has provided children with asthma an
opportunity to experience camping activities they may otherwise be denied due to their
condition. Our week-long camp provides an opportunity for both the child and family to work collaboratively in addressing issues surrounding asthma management. OBJECTIVES
TRAINED STAFF Staff includes over 60 volunteers, including physicians, registered respiratory therapists, registered nurses and trained counselors. MEDICAL STAFF Asthma Adventure Camp is staffed 24 hours a day by physicians, registered nurses and registered respiratory therapist, in order to meet the special needs of the campers. Campers are evaluated by their assigned nurse a minimum of four times a day. In addition, their peak flow is monitored at least twice a day.
Trained counselors, assisted by medical staff, supervise the children and encourage participation in a variety of activities, such as swimming, canoeing, nature hikes, field games and arts and crafts. In addition to traditional camping activities, children attend educational sessions, during which they learn asthma management techniques. Motivational/self-esteem guest speakers are also featured throughout the week. ILLINOIS - July 9-14, 2006 CAMPER REQUIREMENTS Anyone meeting specific medical, age and geographic requirements may attend Asthma Adventure Camp. Our program is designed exclusively for children who would not otherwise be able to attend an overnight camp because of their asthma. CAMPERS MUST BE
Camp Cost - $250 per camper (Scholarships available) The American Lung Association of Illinois is aware of the constraints asthma can place on a family. To ease this burden, each camper pays only a minimum registration fee of $250 to attend a full week of camp. Through generous contributions from individuals, corporations, foundations and special event fundraisers, we are able to keep our cost low. A full week of asthma camp would cost over $600 per child which is a savings of over $350. No one is turned away from camp due to inability to pay. Financial assistance is available for our families who may be unable to pay the full registration fee; payment plans may also be set up for those interested in paying in installments. Families are required to pay some portion of the registration fee. If financial assistance is needed, please call 1-800-586-4872 or download the financial assistance Find an Asthma Camp Near You |
