Test Your Home For Radon
The USEPA estimates that 13% of lung cancer deaths are radon related. The remaining 87% of lung cancer deaths are related to smoking. The USEPA has also concluded that smokers are at a higher risk from radon. Elevated radon levels have been found throughout Illinois. The only way to tell how much radon you have in your home is to test for it. The American Lung Association of Illinois is pleased to offer a limited number of free radon test kits. These test kits were made available through partnerships with the Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA) and the USEPA. By testing your home for radon, you are taking a step toward a healthier indoor environment for you and your family. Plan to place your radon test kit in an area where it won’t be disturbed during the three-day testing period. The test kits should then be mailed to the designated laboratory for analysis and a report on the radon levels will be mailed back to you. Additional kits are available at most hardware stores for less than $20. Look for kits certified by either the National Environmental Health Association or the National Radon Safety Board. If you have general questions about radon, direct your questions to the IEMA toll
free line at 1-800-245-1325. If you would like to obtain a free test kit or have
questions about the test kit and test results, please contact Barb Nowack of ALA Illinois
at 1-217-787-5864, ext. 226 or Becky Flatt, ext. 209.
